This seems to be the only option for more than 4 lanes?
(The Geeetech A30T board seems to require a UART conversion which looks a bit risky and complex to do)

What is the reason for it not being recommended?

The only recommended board is the BTT MMB CAN, as it is natively supported via Happy Hare. All other boards require a custom configuration, which I can create if you open a controller request issue on the 3MS Gtihub.
