Oh my god thank you so much. This has been plaguing me for months. I couldnt even open stuff like Windows Terminal without going directly to /WindowsApps and opening the exe.

Now if you could only solve some icons being replaced by the xnview icon, my computer would be perfect.

Both of those programs don't show anything about XnView. I've tried refreshing the icon cache multiple ways. Strangely this only does this when searching for programs but not on the program list when you open the start menu.

Thanks for trying though. I'm stubbornly against reinstalling windows.

+1 ⬆ Just to bump this, I love you so fucking much, this literally saved my life. I have just finished a full windows reinstallation two weeks ago, and wanted to change an app's icon (more specifically, Spotify's icon on the taskbar), messed with the permissions a little bit (all I did was changed the owner of WindowsApp folder to Everyone and turned on child inheritance), and even after that, Windows wouldn't let me change the icon. So I just gave up, won't change the icon anymore but then everything broke, can't even open any (MSstore) apps anymore. Every website, every forum, every "solution" on Google tells me to reinstall windows by wiping the entire C: disk. Like this is a fresh system that I *just* finished setting up, everything is done, all the settings are configured properly, like no I am not doing another windows reinstall any soon. Then found a link to this github on a sketchy blog website, literally saved my life. THANK. YOU. SO. MUCH. If a trans girl is sucking you off already, make that two trans girls gonna suck you off. You should have a buymeacoffee so that we can support you for this!

renaming the app folder by adding -old at the end, making a copy of the folder, and renaming the copy back to the original name.

will work? I have modified the exe file to have its icon changed but can't copy it back to the WindowsApp folder.
