Just upgraded to fira-code 5 and can reproduce the issue.
I believe this is due to a miss match between otf and ttf.
The new versions of fira code on linux and windows advise using ttf, but I only supported otf.
I don't have the time or the will redo this, with ttf.
Lowercase a and e look very thick, and too big and round compared to other letters. This is especially noticeable at smaller font sizes.

In Fira Sans, the "a" and "d" are approximately the same width.

That doesn't appear to be the case here. The "a" almost looks stretched.
