https://www.dre.vanderbilt.edu/~schmidt/ACE-install.html has a link to http://www.dre.vanderbilt.edu/~schmidt/DOC_ROOT/ACE/ACE-INSTALL.html which no longer works. Can that be fixed or is there another URL that should be used for ACE-INSTALL.html?

Can't we use a url to github?

Not for rendered HTML unless we set up GitHub Pages. We could change it to Markdown?

I have send Doug an email to ask him whether you can make his copy of ACE/TAO available again

New location for the pages from Doug at https://www.cs.wm.edu/~dcschmidt/

Looks like it's not ready to use. This is 404 https://www.cs.wm.edu/~dcschmidt/ACE-install.html

Better link to https://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/DOCGroup/ACE_TAO/blob/master/ACE/ACE-INSTALL.html

I don't think we can use this in documentation (for OpenDDS in this case, but other downstream projects would be similar).

It doesn't actually provide a URL for the content being referenced, it just runs JS in the browser to load it.

So in our downstream documentation we can't, for example, check for broken links.

For the longterm looks a conversion to markdown seems the best, we can’t guarantee that we have the html hosted somewhere forever

I'm not sure we should do this, but we can actually use html preview in OpenDDS's case. We already do it automatically for some html in our own repo. The same code could be modified to work for other repos.

I think that probably would be good, but I'm wondering what automatic tools like pandoc would make of them. Some of the pages like the install pages have some interesting HTML.
