However, the helper text does change so that is good, it's only the scaffolding color that doesn't change. Not a big issue.

Seems like this behavior has changed a little, perhaps due to using a different theme? I'm using 2014 and when I'm in thread view and click on "reply" the scaffolding color of the replied comment invariably is the color of the comment to which one is replying. It does not change when selecting a different KT although as mentioned above, the scaffolding text automatically conforms to the KT selected. This behavior is shown in image:
