We don't need to save all the internal edges and vertices to get the ECT. Perhaps when adding edges and vertices we could allow for a simplification where adjacent 2-cells can be merged into one. Perhaps this is better as a simplification step at the end? Not sure the best way to do this but it would make computing the actual ECT much faster
