What new functionality do you need?

I am trying to run the gsi workflow on the machine Hercules with binary instead of netcdf4 diagnostics files. I have changed the appropriate flags and made several other changes but it still crashes. How do I add binary diagnostic support?

@dmajor256umd The binary functionality in the GSI has not kept up with netCDF for a few years and not something that we check/test. I think this would require an overhaul of both the global workflow and the GSI, which I don't think would get done. Is there a specific reason you need the binaries instead of the netCDF files?

@dmajor256umd - I agree with what @DavidHuber-NOAA has said: the binary diag files have not been exercised for GFS in global-workflow in quite some time. I recommend switching to the netcdf diag files if possible.

How are you initializing this run? By default, the GSI will use the diags (radstat) from the previous cycle and most ICs that are used nowadays have netcdf radstats. Could this be the source of your error?
