Dear OpenGov Africa Contributors
We’ve taken a few days to process, reflect, and regroup, and we want to share something important with you.
This year, we applied to Google Summer of Code (GSoC) as a mentoring organization for the very first time. We didn’t get accepted into this cycle.
And still, we are deeply proud.
Proud that we dared to dream.
Proud that we showed up.
Proud that we believed our work belongs on a global open-source stage.
As we reflected, something became clear: many of the first-time organizations accepted this year are not new projects, in the sense that they have been building steadily for years, refining their repositories, expanding their maintainer base, strengthening documentation, and growing mentor capacity before stepping into GSoC.
That insight didn’t discourage us. It sharpened us.
It reminded us that sustainable open source is built on people, structure, and consistency, and that’s exactly what we’re committed to strengthening.
This application cycle taught us a lot internally:
Now, we want to build intentionally with you.
We’re welcoming feedback from all contributors:
And here’s the most important part:
We need more maintainers.
More maintainers mean:
If you know strong open-source contributors who align with our mission, please tell us.
If you have names or links to maintainers you’d like to suggest:
Name as many as possible. We will reach out.
Sustainability is built through people. And we are ready to expand our core.
To those already building with us, @caffeine-rohit, @Raziel206, @Divyanshu-Off, @Lochit-Vinay, @nadaa, and many others whose work continues to strengthen our repositories, thank you. Your contributions are not small. Your consistency matters more than you know.
And to everyone participating in this current GSoC cycle elsewhere, we wish you clarity and excellence. Learn deeply & Contribute boldly.
As for us?
We only just started.
We refine.
We document.
We grow our maintainer bench.
We build mentor pipelines.
We strengthen our systems.
And next year, we return stronger.
Build like the stars you are, because you are not waiting for recognition. You are building legacy in real time.
With gratitude,
OpenGov Africa
