Hey Viv - I really love this post. One of my questions is about the strategy and likelihood of data guilds being the form factor that intitiates the flood of the attestation <-> application flywheel. As you rightly recognise, "emerging social platforms or even entirely new ones are better positioned" to adopt data guilds, because (in general) category-wide innovation only happens when you start by enabling a radically different experience, and only then, after growth, does the new technology become a standard that cannibalises legacy technologies and social experiences. How feasible do you think it would be to compose data guilds into new social platforms like Farcaster or Mastodon? I wonder if this is too skeuomorphic because in that scenario the value proposition of a data guild that people get a bit richer. Do you think that this would be enough to get people using a whole different kind of network? As an illustration of an alternative, one of the ideas we like at Tonk is Arnaud Schenk's idea of "trust infrastructure" as high-context, hyperproductive social spaces that you can programmatically enter based on your attributes rather than who you know. Another metaphor for the value proposition is a cosy web that you can actually surf. This would enable a kind of social experience that would be impossible on any other kind of existing infrastructure, and so is a another promising starting point for the idea of data guilds. https://gestalt.cafe/trust-infrastructure/ ~ Baz <3 |
