Basically I would add a command that put a name to an edit, together with the date, in order to understand why this edit exist.
It could be a different way to use your plugin, for people that doesn't want to rely to git or doesn't have the skill to put in place and to maintain a git repository.
The automatic saving of edit could be switched off and an user could manually add an edit, when they prefer, adding a name as a tag (or commit summary if you want to use a git naming).
