Name: Satellite - Altimetry calibration and validation
2+
Description: "High precision satellite altimeter missions including TOPEX/Poseidon\
3+
\ (T/P), Jason-1 and now OSTM/Jason-2, have contributed fundamental advances in\
4+
\ our understanding of regional and global ocean circulation and its role in the\
5+
\ Earth's climate and regional applications. These altimeter satellites essentially\
6+
\ observe the height of the global oceans \u2013 as such, they have become the tool\
7+
\ of choice for scientists to measure sea level rise \u2013 both at regional and\
8+
\ global scales as well as giving information about ocean currents and large- and\
9+
\ small-scale variability. The determination of changes in global mean sea level\
10+
\ is of fundamental importance in understanding the response of the ocean to a continuing\
11+
\ warming climate \u2013 both through thermal expansion of the ocean, melting of\
12+
\ the major ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, and mountain glaciers, and redistribution\
13+
\ of water over the continents and atmosphere. As with all scientific observations,\
14+
\ it is vital that the measurement tool is operating within its specifications \u2013\
15+
\ calibration and validation is therefore an important component in this regard.\
16+
\ \n\nThis IMOS sub-facility provides the sole southern hemisphere in situ calibration\
17+
\ site to provide an ongoing calibration and validation data stream directly to\
18+
\ the international (NASA and CNES sponsored) Ocean Surface Topography Science Team\
19+
\ (OSTST). This contribution, importantly, spans multiple altimeter missions, thus\
20+
\ enabling the assimilation of multi-mission satellite data to determine ongoing\
21+
\ changes in sea level with flow-on effects to other uses of this data. The OSTST\
22+
\ collectively oversees the operation and calibration of the precision altimetry\
23+
\ missions, and ensures each of these missions is performing as accurately as possible\
24+
\ in order to meet mission objectives. The IMOS supported calibration site in Australia\
25+
\ is one of four primary in situ calibration/validation sites that contribute to\
26+
\ the OSTST. The remaining sites include Harvest (USA), Corsica (France), and Gavdos\
27+
\ (Greece). The Australian calibration site includes two comparison points where\
28+
\ in situ data is compared against the altimeter \u2013 Bass Strait and Storm Bay.\
29+
\ These two locations both lie on descending (N -> S) pass 088 of the satellite\
30+
\ altimeter, and thus share similar satellite orbit characteristics. The use of\
31+
\ these two sites allows detailed investigation into the accuracy of the altimeter\
32+
\ over two different wave climates. The average significant wave height at Storm\
33+
\ Bay is approximately double that observed at the comparatively sheltered Bass\
34+
\ Strait location. One of the ongoing issues with satellite altimeter missions is\
35+
\ the \u201CSea-state bias\u201D correction which is related to wave shape and height.\
36+
\ We plan to use the different wave climates at the two locations, coupled with\
37+
\ the fact that some other things (such as orbit errors) are the same at both locations\
38+
\ to improve the quality of this correction."

Name: Satellite - Sea surface temperature - Level 3 - Single sensor - 1 day - Day
2+
and night time - Southern Ocean
3+
Description: "This is a single-sensor SSTfnd product for a single 24 hour period,\
4+
\ derived using observations from AVHRR instruments on all available NOAA polar-orbiting\
5+
\ satellites. It is provided as a 0.02deg x 0.02deg cylindrical equidistant projected\
6+
\ map over the Southern Ocean region 3\xB0E to 158\xB0W, 27\xB0S to 78\xB0S. Each\
7+
\ grid cell contains the 24 hour average of all the highest available quality SSTs\
8+
\ that overlap with that cell, weighted by the area of overlap. The diagram at\
9+
\ https://help.aodn.org.au/satellite-data-product-information/ indicates where this\
10+
\ product fits within the GHRSST suite of NOAA/AVHRR products. The SSTfnd is derived\
11+
\ by adding a constant 0.17 degC to the SSTskin observations after rejecting observations\
12+
\ with low surface wind speeds (<6m/s by day and <2m/s at night) (see http://www.bom.gov.au/amoj/docs/2011/beggs.pdf).\
13+
\ Matchups with buoy SSTfnd observations indicate typical 2014 biases of < 0.01\
14+
\ degC and standard deviations of 0.6 degC. Refer to the IMOS SST products web page\
15+
\ at http://imos.org.au/sstproducts.html and Beggs et al. (2013) at http://imos.org.au/sstdata_references.html\
16+
\ for further information."

Name: Wave buoys observations - Real time
2+
Description: "Buoys provide integral wave parameters. Buoy data from the following\
3+
\ organisations contribute to the National Wave Archive: Manly Hydraulics Laboratory\
4+
\ (part of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), which has assumed\
5+
\ function of the former NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH)); Bureau of\
6+
\ Meteorology; Western Australia Department of Transport (DOT); the Queensland Department\
7+
\ of Environment and Science (DES); the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS);\
8+
\ Gippsland Ports; the NSW Nearshore Wave Data Program from the NSW Department of\
9+
\ Planning and Environment (DPE); the University of Western Australia (UWA); Deakin\
10+
\ University, Pilbara Ports Authority and Flinders University and South Australian\
11+
\ Research and Development Institute (SARDI). \n\nThe data from MHL, BOM, DOT, DES,\
12+
\ Gippsland Ports and Pilbara Ports Authority, is gathered by the Waverider system\
13+
\ developed by the Dutch company, Datawell. Some older wave data were collected\
14+
\ using non-directional Waverider buoys. As technology advanced and directional\
15+
\ measuring capabilities were developed in wave buoys, wave buoy networks were gradually\
16+
\ upgraded to directional Waverider buoys. Therefore, some older datasets do not\
17+
\ have directional information whereas newer datasets have directional information.\n\
18+
\nThe data from IMOS, the NSW Nearshore Wave Data Program, DPE, UWA, Deakin, Flinders\
19+
\ University and SARDI comes from Spotter Wave Buoys, developed by Sofar Ocean Technologies,\
20+
\ which collect data similarly to the Waverider system.\n\nBOM, DES, DOT, MHL, IMOS\
21+
\ (some) and Gippsland Ports - The wave buoy data is issued in GTS bulletins (which\
22+
\ are only available for 24 hours) : IOWK01 (in BUFR format) and SWWE01 (CREX format).\
23+
\ The data is collated by the Bureau into a CSV file (containing the last 24 hours\
24+
\ of observations) which is updated every hour, at 5 minutes past the hour. This\
25+
\ data is provided via WFS to the AODN.\nNote - The Maria Island buoy is currently\
26+
\ undergoing repairs, so data is unavailable, we will update when resolved (May\
27+
\ 2024).\n\nIMOS (some), DPE, UWA, Deakin, Flinders University + SARDI - The data\
28+
\ is updated every hour, at 40 minutes past the hour.\n\nPilbara Ports Authority\
29+
\ - The data is uploaded every hour, at 30 minutes past the hour."
