Do not ever start working on an issue before you are assigned !

You must be first assigned to an issue before you start work.

Please learn the proper GitHub workflow.

Comment on one issue only say you want to work on it and wait for a maintainer to assign you to that issue.

I am trying to understand this. A Makefile is like a recipe book for building software projects.
When someone says "Update and expand the Makefile" on GitHub, they're basically saying:

• Fix the existing recipes that might be broken or out of date
• Like updating an old cooking recipe that calls for ingredients you can't buy anymore
• Add more useful recipes/commands
• For example, if the Makefile only knows how to "build the program," maybe add commands to "test the program" or "clean up messy files"
  My technical knowledge is insufficient to assist on this at present.
