Research Request - Stop-Level Ridership Data Derived from Cal-ITP Open Payments Customer Data #2178

Description

@evansiroky

Research Question

Single sentence description: The Transit Data Quality Team would like to obtain stop-level ridership data derived from open-loop payments data.

Detailed description:The Transit Data Quality Team would like to use the Cal-ITP Open Payments Data in order to create new stop level ridership datasets that can contribute to the overall amount of ridership datasets that the team is collecting statewide.

How will this research be used?

The data will be included in our publicly available list of ridership data and also included in aggregated statewide stop level ridership datasets.

Stakeholders & End-Users

The Transit Data Quality Team would like the data, but before proceeding, we should obtain the consent of individual transit agencies to perform this analysis.

Metrics

The end data product could be either a TIDES or GTFS-RIDE dataset for each agency for a certain time period. If TIDES, we would want to make sure the data doesn't have data that could be used to identify individuals.

Data sources

  • Cal-ITP data sources: Open loop payments data

  • External data sources: GTFS

  • Remaining data source questions:

Deliverables

Initially a script is fine, but we may want to have a data model create this data somehow.

Timeline of deliverables

Before November 2026.
