Downscaling coarse WSE to a finer resolution with methods described in Bryant et. al., (2023) which apply simple hydraulic assumptions and a fine resolution DEM.

Three methods are provided with varying treatment of the three resample cases (wet-wet (WW), wet-partial (WP), and dry-partial (DP)):

Resample: [WW] simple bilinear resampling (e.g., gdal_warp)

TerrainFilter: [WW+WP]: bilinear resampling followed by a terrain filter

CostGrow: [WW+WP+DP]: as in 'TerrainFilter' followed by a cost distance routine to grow the inundation and an isolated flooding filter.

CostGrow requires the WhiteboxTools for QGIS plugin to be installed and configured (https://www.whiteboxgeo.com/manual/wbt_book/qgis_plugin.html)

CostGrow's 'isolated flooding' filter is used to select the result WSE clump from the cost distance map. Two methods are available for this:

area: the n='selection count' clumps with largest area are selected (faster, may be inaccurate for large complex domains)

pixel: those clumps overlapping the original coarse WSE pixel centroids are included (slower, more accurate)

Tips and Tricks

The WSE and DEM grids need to have the same extent
The WSE resolution should be an even multiple of the WSE resolution (e.g., downscale from 4m to 2m... not from 5m to 2m). This may require some pre-processing (gdal_warp) to obtain an even multiple.
For the CostGrow method, the 'isolated filter' step is often problematic. To debug this (and other steps), compare the output log to the files in the temporary directory to see which step is causing the error.
