Is the server dropped for good?

Are there any plans for updating the server part as well?
The first experiments with dump seem to work with minor concerns (for example the format of date, but it's fairly common, in my experience to have to tune these kind of things) so having the server working could be really good for rapid prototyping.
Do you have suggestions for approaching an update of the server part? Do you think it needs to be rewritten from scratch, or is it possible to work on the existing code?
