I'm on fedora kde5 with the latest updates.

I don't know why cmake requires a c++ compiler here (you don't need it for places-widget) but installing the g++ package should take care of it.

As I said though, it should be enough to unlock your desktop, download https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/download/id/1509196482/places-widget-1.2.plasmoid and drag it from your file manager onto your desktop.

I just changed the category of the places widget on opendesktop.org, you should now be able to install it through plasma.
