references not clear

I kept wanting to click in the references section to add entries. I realized after a while that I needed to use the [1] icon. So, fine, either a possible interface improvement or maybe I'm just slow :). But more importantly, there's an assumption about reference formatting and style that each reference will have an anchor in the text. It would be nice to be able to add a "free-floating" reference just by clicking in the references section.
