Search query by gene takes about an order of magnitude longer than by modification #193

Even w/o gene selection for the modification search it is faster, and the query returns significantly more records.
This is something I observed earlier, but seems worst now, though it might just be a matter of perception. Maybe we ought to re-write/optimize the query...
Additional context
On branch feature/ms15-api, but this is happening on production.
