I'm working on refactoring now to make that possible.

Per Slack discussion with @specialunderwear:

So the roadmap could look like this:

1. make oscar_elasticsearch work as a replacement for the search app
2. without depending on wagtail
3. implement the extensions for the database backend of wagtail
4. merge into oscar because then it is widely useable
