Support for Climate data and products based on EO observations

Dear @gilbertocamara here is the feature request after our discussion yesterday.

Currently, SITS focuses on satellite products, but many times scientists combine satellite imagery with other EO-based products. e.g. ERA-5, SIF, LST, etc. Then having the capacity to process all this information using SITS will simplify the processing pipelines and the complexity to produce ARD. Please find below some STAC catalogs with biophysical products that we hope can be easily integrated in SITS:

Dear @dpabon, many thanks for your suggestion. We agree that it would be useful for many researchers to be able to use meteorological and climatological data in sits. Currently, sits is organised as a land use and land cover mapping software to be used with satellites such as Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat. To support climate data, we would have to include support for netCDF and ZARR files. This implementation will require a lot of work on our side. Until at least the second half of 2026, our team is busy with improvements to the current 2D + time data analysis functions. As soon as we have a little bit more time, we will reconsider your suggestion as a possible way forward for sits.
