Problem Statement
The “What is Ethereum?” page currently includes legacy terminology such as “Ethereum 1.0” and “Ethereum 2.0.” Since the Merge and subsequent consensus upgrades, this terminology has been deprecated across all official Ethereum communications. Using the updated terminology—Execution Layer and Consensus Layer—will align ethereum.org content with the current network architecture and prevent confusion for readers who are new to the ecosystem.
While the historical terms were once used to differentiate the proof-of-work and proof-of-stake networks, the Ethereum community has officially unified them since the Merge. Newcomers reading outdated terminology might assume there are two different blockchains or versions of Ethereum, which can lead to misinformation across social media and educational channels.
Describe the solution you'd like
Proposed Solution:
- Update all mentions of “Ethereum 1.0” → “Execution Layer”
- Update all mentions of “Ethereum 2.0” → “Consensus Layer”
- Add a short clarification section (two sentences) explaining:
“The terms ‘Ethereum 1.0’ and ‘Ethereum 2.0’ are now deprecated. Ethereum is a single unified chain composed of the Execution and Consensus layers.”
- Include a contextual link to Ethereum Foundation Blog: The Merge and Beyond.
Describe alternatives you've considered
Benefits
- Improves technical accuracy and consistency.
- Supports alignment with Ethereum Foundation communications.
- Provides clarity for new community members and developers.
