Does Immich scan upload folder immediately if file type is changed?

If I convert a video file in my UPLOAD_LOCATION (mp4 -> mkv) will Immich scan and register this change automatically or only periodically or not?

You should never make any changes in the UPLOAD_LOCATION

Ok. The reason is: My UPLOAD_Folder is watched by Jellyfin. Jellyfin is the DLNA proviser for my rather old Samsung TV (no Tizen OS). Jellyfin is running on RPi 5 but it hasn't enough power to convert mp4 to mkv online. I always get network errors when trying to play mp4 videos directly. Only converted videos are played. Unfortunately Immich has no DLNA service (and I will get the same resource problems if it has). So what would be the best way to use Immich with it's good features and to provide the same basic material for my old TV without doubling data?

You may want to look into external libraries. I also don't really understand your use case though. Why would you want your movies you watch through jellyfin in Immich in the first place? In my mind Immich and Jellyfin have pretty distinct use cases

Because Immich has no DLNA service. I want to watch stored videos from my smartphone on TV.

Oh I think I'm starting to understand what you're trying to do. We aren't talking about movies/TV shows but rather actual videos you took with your phone or whatever and want to show on the TV? Videos that actually belong in Immich and aren't Linux ISOs?

Sorry I'm on Smartphone now. Let us continue later resp. tomorrow. The main Problem ist that my TV can't Play *.mp4 directly. So I've to convert such files. I dom't understand your question about Linux ISOs. I'm talking about *.mp4 videos from an Android Smartphone which can't be played directly by my old Samsung tv. Jellyfin is my DLNA server. And Jellyfin is watching the UPLOAD_DIR (placed on an external storage) of Immich. I've a systemd job running which watches the UPLOAD_DIR and starts a video_convert.sh on changes. This script makes a backup of a founded *.mp4 to a folder outside of Immich and Jellyfin, converts *.mp4 file to *.mkv and if successfully deletes original *.mp4 file. Until now I can't see that there are any issues for Immich or Jellyfin. But to be sure I want to start a check/reorganisation of the internal UPLOAD_DIR. Maybe it's not necessary. I tried to reorganize UPLOAD_DIR by API access but I didn't found the correct endpoint for that job. There are only usable endpoints for external libraries. The documentation for the API interface seems rather sparse to me. Is there a comprehensive guide somewhere with examples of the parameters for GET and POST strings?

What you're describing isn't possible and Immich will lose track of the original files like this. You likely won't notice that immediately, but as soon as you want to do anything that requires the original file Immich will error on that operation since it cannot load the file. As for API documentation, https://api.immich.app is all we got; which IMO isn't too incomprehensible. If you have specific questions feel free to ask :)

My specific question: Is there a way to force Immich to rescan the UPLOAD_LOCATION via an API call, other than when images and videos are backed up directly from the smartphone? Would restarting the Docker container have a similar effect?
