I use a Dvorak keyboard layout (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_keyboard_layout) in Settings > Time & Language > Language > Preferred Language > English (United States) > Options > Keyboards. So, my QWERTY keys are, in order, ',.pyf ("<>PYF when shift is held).
When I tried to change the button assignments to use the physical WASD for Up, Left, Down, and Right nothing seemed to happen when I pressed the physical W key (logically a comma ",") in the button assignments windows of Sonic 1 or Sonic 2. It just timed out.
According to a log in Autohotkey, the virtual key and scan code of my physical W button when shift is not held is:
Virtual Key: 0xBC
Scan Code: 0x011
