"Search Filters" pane of "Search And Replace" widget
shows wrong number of selected cells.

Reproduce

1. Open Jupyter Notebook.
2. Create a cell.
3. Select both cells with <Shift>+<Up>.
4. Actual: 2 cells are selected.
5. Press <Ctrl>+F.
6. "Search And Replace" widget appears.
7. Click Show Search Filters.
8. "Search Filters" pane appears.
9. Expected: Search in 2 Selected Cells.
10. Actual: Search in 1 Selected Cell.

Expected behavior

"Search Filters" pane of "Search And Replace" widget
shows wrong number of selected cells:
Search in 2 Selected Cells.

Hi! I'd like to work on this issue . I was able to understand and reproduce the reported behaviour, and I'd like to investigate the selected-cell count in the Search and Replace filters and work on a fix with a regression test.

Hi @avnipatidar06. Thank you for looking into this, finding a repro, and wanting to work on the fix. Please feel free to open a PR with the fix and link it here. Also note that we don't require issues to be assigned to people before accepting PRs (I'd say if issue is large and there's an ongoing discussion, it might make sense to check in but if it's a relatively small issue without a discussion like this one, it's ok to just open a PR).

One recommendation is to make sure this is Notebook problem and fix and not JupyterLab (that Notebook depends on) problem. You could try repro-ing this in JupyterLab as a 1st step (only seeing this in Notebook would confirm that it's a Notebook problem and vice versa).

Thanks for the suggestion. I tested the same reproduction steps in JupyterLab, and the issue occurs there as well , selecting 2 cells still results in the Search & Replace filter showing 1 selected cell. I'll investigate the JupyterLab implementation to identify where the incorrect count is coming from.

Hi, thank you for the guidance. I was able to reproduce the issue and also confirmed that the behavior is related to the JupyterLab side rather than being specific to Notebook. I started working on the regression test and investigated the selection state and NotebookSearchProvider initialization. However, I wasn't able to arrive at a clean, reliable fix yet, so I don't want to open a PR with an uncertain change. I really appreciate your guidance and the opportunity to investigate this issue.
