[amoy] Heimdall v.1.2.0 unable to connect to any peers #1232

Heimdall version (use heimdall version or git rev-parse --verify HEAD if installed from source):

1.2.0

Environment:

  • OS PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS"
  • Install tools: Vanilla system
  • Others: Installed both heimdall and bor

What happened:
Running a sentry node on the amoy network with latest version and snapshot, however no peers can be reached. This has been the state for 2days now.

What you expected to happen:
To eventually connect to a peer and start syncing

Have you tried the latest version: yes/no

How to reproduce it (as minimally and precisely as possible):
Performed the following steps:

  • install heimdall via curl -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/maticnetwork/install/main/heimdall.sh | bash -s -- v1.2.0 amoy sentry
  • download snapshot from https://snapshots.publicnode.com/polygon-amoy-heimdall-6690600.tar.lz4
  • extract the snapshot into /var/lib/heimdall/data and correct permissions to be owned by heimdall:nogroup recursively
  • start the heimdalld services

Your sure there is no firewall blocking port 26656 ?

That is a valid point, however I have tested that by running a python https server on a random VPS:

root@polygon-amoy:/var/lib/bor# telnet 65.109.100.81 26656
Trying 65.109.100.81...
Connected to 65.109.100.81.
Escape character is '^]'.

So no, there is no outbound firewall rule blocking that port

Just for the sake of eliminating a problematic environment I spun up a GCP (Google compute VM) instance where the results are the same.

  • is there a peer list I can try?
  • can I check connectivity via simple tools like telnet to the peers?

Here two peers you can try to add them to persistent_peers in config.toml.

Thanks. Only one of the provided peers is reachable (34.89.75.187) while the other one is not:

However like stated, my heimdall instance is running on Amoy:

When connecting to peers above I get:

Going forward: what is the right way of finding peers for amoy?

Using these seeds/peers is the right way and it allows your node to find new peers via peer discovery mechanism.
