Browsing by category and getting fewer results than listed

We placed the widget on the Digital Chalkboard front page, and the admins are concerned because often the count of resources shown when browsing is not what is delivered in the list of results to the end user. In many cases you get more results than expected, but in some zero results are returned.

Three examples from the DC widget that return zero results:

• Math > operations > basic operations > multiplication and division - browse tab promises 3 resources
• STEM > applied sciences - browse tab promises 38 resources
• English Language Development - browse tab promises 18 resources

Is there anything we can do to improve the counts?
