Hiding filetypes in Thunar?

I am starting to look into a photo editing tool called Darktable. Darktable creates a .xmp file for each image file. I find this clutters the folder viewing in Thunar so I started for ways to hide these .xmp files.

Following these instructions I find I can hide individual files but not all files ending with .xmp. Specifying *.xmp in .hidden does not work.

Probably a very good idea but I will start with the fora I am already participating in.

Here is my current understanding of the situation and alternative 'solutions'.

Thunar:

• The algorithm governing show/no show decisions is not very sophisticated. It can hide files listed in .hidden but there is no way to use wild cards.
• One 'solution' is to sort by type which means the xpm files end up at the bottom of the window.
• A more advanced 'solution' is to create a script parsing the folder and updating .hidden. This could be done as a wrapper for Thunar.

Darktable:

• The creation of xpm files can be turned off in settings. However, the manual strongly advice against this.

I am going for the sort by type 'solution' for now.
