component rust-docs is required and cannot be removed

Hello all,
Running rustup component remove rust-docs gives me

error: component 'rust-docs' for target 'x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu' is required for toolchain 'stable-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu' and cannot be removed

I am on

> rustup show          
Default host: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu

installed toolchains

on Arch Linux, with rustup installed via pacman.
Shouldn't the rust documentation be optional and able to be removed? If this is the intended behavior, why is it so?
