The user must be able to have multiple versions of the frozen binary downloaded and/or installed.

Issue #1146 only referred to the .dmg file and it was solved as part of PR #1145

Below there is a screenshot showing that PyMca5.9.4.dmg leads to PyMca5.9.4.app while PyMca5.9.5rc2.dmg leads to PyMca5.app instead of to PyMca5.9.5rc2.app

I believe the logic should be the other way around: if the minority of users who need multiple PyMca versions side-by-side want that setup, they can rename the application themselves.

There are several reasons for not having the version number in the application name.

1. It breaks Dock persistence. If a user drags 'PyMca 5.9.3.app' to the Dock, macOS creates a specific file path shortcut. When they install the next version, that Dock icon breaks or becomes a dead link if the user removes the old version. Users expect the Dock icon to always launch the latest installed version.
2. It complicates updates. macOS doesn't have an uninstall the previous version first before installing the new one. Now the simple action of dragging and dropping doesn't do that anymore.
3. It can reset permissions, like disk write permissions that have to be given for each new version installed.
4. You already have a proper versioning system in macOS via CFBundleVersion. Also, users can check the version they are running fairly easily.

You are forcing a non-standard behavior. I currently have 79 applications installed, and none of them have the version number. I hope you don't mind me raising these points; I just wanted to offer my perspective as a Mac user.

That non standard behavior is there since 2006

I will think about. PyMca users are very conservative concerning changing version and side by side installations are common.

I have checked with the XMI-MSIM code and it follows the approach you suggest (version in dmg file but not in the installed application).
