Tableau Desktop Extension Showing Not Connected

Describe the bug

A clear and concise description of what the bug is. Please include which MCP host was used e.g.,

MCP Host is Tableau. Tableau is enabled as a desktop extension but when claude is prompted it says does not have tableau connection access. Tableau has additionally been fed a server, and PAT value.

Expected behavior

A clear and concise description of what was expected to happen.
I expect that the computer is able to fetch and read tableau files as the extension says enabled.

Hey @nataliecutter, we'll need a little more info to figure out what's going on. Claude Desktop writes some logs that should help.

On Windows, they should be in C:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Claude\logs
On Mac, not sure where they are located... maybe ~/Library/Logs/Claude/

There should be an mcp.log file as well as a file named something similar to mcp-server-tableau.log.

Also, please share the non-secret values you specified in the config variables.

@mwasilewski33 looks like things were working for you and then they stopped working? I see some successful sign-ins and tool calls at the beginning of the log, but then at the end it looks like the process is exiting early.

There should be a mcp.log file too in the same directory that may include the error why the Tableau MCP server is closing unexpectedly. Could you please take a look at it and see if anything stands out. Tableau MCP should only really exit early if there's some configuration issue.

Claude thought I had two competing MCP's configured in Claude Desktop but I could not follow that trail through.

Hmm, can you share how the MCP server is configured in Claude? There's nothing in those logs that sheds any light on why the process is exiting early.

That looks all fine too. Not sure what's going on. I can see the MCP server starting, it then begins telling Claude which tools are available, but then the process stops. We haven't seen this before.

We'll have a new 2.0 release next week that improves logging, which may help identify what's happening.

I would also suggest trying out the MCP server in a different client, especially a debugging tool like MCPJam, which may provide more details on what's happening.
