Can you give a brief overview on what illumos is?

it's a unix like operating system if i remember correctly its a fork of OpenSolarois, it's mostly used for servers and enterprise work and if im not mistaken it has better integration with ZFS file system since it was for solarois and it has smth similar to docker containers and linux containers before they were fully devloped if im not mistaken which is called zones and from what ik omnios is the stripped down version of illuminOs ig smth similar to a linux distro i also read once it's highly favored for NAS systems but i haven't personally dug deep into that

Alright sounds good. As long as the one submitting the pages actually uses the platform. I don't want a new platform that even the submitter doesn't use.

ok fair enough but howd yknow if the submitter uses the platform or not aside from that for me personally i've not really used it aside from reading about it and watching vids out of curiosity but i do plan to try it later i thought of adding the pages cuz i dont wanna skim through the manual pages sometimes for some commands but i totally understand where you coming from

Right, only it's OpenSolaris – a F/LOSS fork by Sun Microsystems of the proprietary UNIX implementation called Solaris.

It also exists on desktops, but you're right – it's pretty unpopular here.

Yes, ZFS was born circa 2001 in Solaris as the modernization of their UFS (Unix File System) of the BSD fame – the default Solaris FS at the time.
It's worth noting however that their ZFS implementation lags a bit behind the OpenZFS project's development.

True, in 2004 Solaris engineers got a bit ahead of time, I'd say.

There was a storage oriented illumOS distro called Nexenta OS, but later they became proprietary: NexentaStor

But then you could use any illumOS distro to set up your SAN or NAS. Especially if you run the Napp-IT frontend:

Except maybe for SmartOS which recommends keeping its' host files as lean as possible, and only do most changes/servicing from guests (either containers or VMs).

For the desktop use you usually get recommended the OpenIndiana distro. But I suggest to try the Tribblix instead: https://www.tribblix.org/about.html

SmartOS is a hypervisor similar to proxmox right from what i understand about it it's for managing vms

also any reason to recommend Tribblix over OpenIndiana? is it the desktop environment or smth similar to that regarding performance or updates or anything else i also once saw a video says a specfic distro (dilos? i think) uses apt aside from the main pkg manager
