HIV SUCCESS Data

Focused on ending the HIV epidemic, the NIDA cohorts collect longitudinal information on key populations that use substances and are at risk for or living with HIV. These data are critical to understanding the social, psychological, and structural barriers and facilitators to healthy living among these vulnerable populations.

Among our many activities HIV SUCCESS brings together data across cohorts to support studies and analyses that benefit from combined data resources. Each cohort is designed to answer important and unique questions about their population. Rather than overlapping with these, the HIV SUCCESS consortium of cohorts focuses on extending the use of these data to answer unique questions requiring larger samples from different geographic locations. As need and opportunity arise, HIV SUCCESS also supports cross-cohort data collection using standardized questions to investigate new and important research questions in substance and HIV risk or outcomes.

Types of data collected within the NIDA Cohorts include:

Demographics

Mental health measures, such as depression symptoms, anxiety, and others

Substance use behaviors

Overdose

Substance use therapy and harms reduction practices

Engagement in care

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis use (for people without HIV)

Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence (for people with HIV)

Sexual behavior

Other psycho-social measures

Other behavioral measures

Laboratory data including blood, urinalysis and other measures for a range of tests, such as HCV, liver function, STI, urine drug screening, etc.

Clinical data – these vary by cohort, but may include prescriptions, diagnoses, cause of death, and others

Additionally, some of the cohorts collect and bank biospecimens for future studies.

Data Use

HIV SUCCESS welcomes investigators from different institutions and diverse perspectives to explore the data available and propose studies that will add insight into important gaps in our knowledge of substance use and HIV risk or outcomes. Use of data requires an approved concept proposal. If you are interested in conducting a cross-cohort analysis, please feel free to contact the HIV SUCCESS team at [email protected].

Concept Proposals

Interested in conducting a cross-cohort study?

Find a sponsor from one of the cohorts or the coordinating center

Get in contact with the HIV SUCCESS Team to answer any questions

Complete a concept proposal on the study and ask your sponsor to review

Submit your concept proposal to the Publications and Presentation Committee for review at: [email protected]

Concept Proposal Information

Our goal is to produce the best science to advance our understanding of needs, risks and promoting the best health for people who use drugs (PWUD) and to support the end of the HIV epidemic.
HIV SUCCESS uses concept proposals to support high-quality, cutting-edge research that expands the use of data from our cohorts rather than competing with them.

This requires ensuring that:

Concept proposals do not overlap with one another or specific cohort studies, except where this is invited by the cohort(s)

The research question is feasible given the data

Analytical methods are robust

Interpretation is accurate and supports the overall goals of the consortium

HIV SUCCESS aims to support researchers interested in extending the use of the rich NIDA cohorts data to support the health and well-being of PWUD and help end the HIV epidemic; we will support applicants with identifying a concept proposal with the above qualities.

Concept proposals are reviewed monthly and specific feedback is provided.

Support for analyses and other mentoring are available through the coordinating center.

HIV SUCCESS Sponsors

Collaborative working with the whole HIV SUCCESS consortium is an important aim for HIV SUCCESS.

Sponsors are people who know the cohorts, data collection and datasets.

Cohort and coordinating center PIs and co-PIs are excellent choices for sponsors.

If you need help finding a sponsor, please feel free to contact us: [email protected]
