Windows pnpm workspace: rolldown crashes – native binding not installed

Repro

Windows 10/11
Node 20.x
pnpm 10.x

Clone vitepress:

git clone https://github.com/vuejs/vitepress
pnpm install
pnpm run docs

Crash

Cannot find module '@rolldown/binding-win32-x64-msvc'
Cannot find module './rolldown-binding.win32-x64-msvc.node'

"@rolldown/binding-win32-x64-msvc": "^1.0.0-beta.50"

Adding this line manually in the dev deps is permanent solution ? Any one guide me ?

I had the exact same error message. I tried many things and it finally worked! Heres what I have tried:

• [Maybe Irrelavant] I messed up my system env path variable at the same time, so I copied the system path env from a healthy machine
• [Maybe Irrelavant] Opened MS VisualStudio installer to upgrade all MSVS deps stuff
• [Maybe Irrelavant] Added MSVS installation bin folder to system path
• [Maybe Irrelavant] Reboot, reinstall node_modules, still fails.

I think it is the following steps that did the magic:

• npm i -g @rolldown/binding-win32-x64-msvc
• [Maybe Irrelavant] It warns me about my node version too low, so I bumped my node version via nvm install 24.
• npm i -g @rolldown/binding-win32-x64-msvc again. ( I chose to install globally instead of to the project because I do not want to pollute the git repo, because others do not have this problem, only my machine does).
• rm -rf ./node_modules
• pnpm i

And then it just magically worked.
