Savages with sticks dealing no damage

ive noticed that savages with staffs deal no damage to any npc, only to the player. idk if this is on my end but i have no errors showing up.

Do they deal damage in vanilla?
Also if they do, can you provide me with a save that has that scenario set up (before it happens ofc) so I can test? (Also if you do explain what I have to do when loading to have it happen)

im currently in the swamp so theres not alot of savages but this works with any savage that has a staff. theres plenty in chapter 1

There is nothing in my mod that changes the damage of npcs to other npcs, you can try disabling either custom items or custom characters and seeing if it's fixed and then telling me which one it was or you can give me a save where i can consistently test
if you disable both of those and it's still not dealing damage, then in vanilla they function the same
I have no time for a game i already beat and know the lore to spend time playing it for a minor issue like this, I'm sorry that's just how it is
