Impact
An attacker can craft a GET_CSR request where, in the RequesterInfo field, a sufficiently large Common Name (CN) leads to writing data beyond the bounds of a stack-allocated array, possibly leading to stack data corruption.
To enable this vulnerability the libspdm Responder must support the CSR_CAP capability and implement libspdm_gen_csr*() using the libspdm_gen_x509_csr() function in https://github.com/DMTF/libspdm/blob/main/os_stub/cryptlib_mbedtls/pk/x509.c. Of note is that the declaration for libspdm_gen_x509_csr() is in the https://github.com/DMTF/libspdm/blob/main/os_stub/spdm_crypt_ext_lib/cryptlib_ext.h header, and is effectively considered extended or sample code.
DMTF is providing this security advisory as a precaution. Though a CVE severity score is provided, due to the unlikely chance of implementation in a production device, no CVE has been issued.
Patches
The patch has been applied to the 3.8.2 and forthcoming 4.0 releases.
