Some students' perform recordings are unusable

My students have begun working on the various assignments, but most of them are having pretty bad audio results with poor mic feedback. We have tried adjusting microphone settings but haven’t had much luck. Any suggestions? The current submissions are not suitable to be graded accurately because of the mic issues.

it's not "feedback" like when the mic is near the amp, but rather

The mic sound is cutting in and out, and it sounds like the mic frequency is spiking so that it distorts the sound. Apparently, students have had better luck recording on their cell phones. I am suggesting that they record on their phones and pull the music up on their computers.

We need to:

1. reproduce the issue
   2. anyone who can try to record in a perform activity with no headphones and output volume normal/high and no external mic
   3. try with airbuds in
   4. try with output on mute
   5. try with cheap headphones with no mic
   6. try with cheap with mic
2. see if it's in our control to solve the issue
3. we wish we had telemetrics right now
   9. what mic hardware? what browser? what OS? whether there seems to be any other software layers in between
