VizCritique Pro is a Cowork skill that integrates with Tableau MCP to deliver structured, evidence-based evaluations of Tableau dashboards and views. It applies a weighted 7-domain scoring framework to assess visual design quality — not business performance or data correctness — and returns actionable recommendations with estimated time-to-fix and point impact.
The skill activates on natural language requests ("review this viz", "score my dashboard", "critique this view") or through the /viz-review command. It fetches the full native-size image and metadata directly from Tableau Cloud, performs visual analysis including interactivity assessment, and delivers a brief summary with an overall score before offering the full review in the user's preferred format.
When triggered, VizCritique Pro follows a three-step workflow. First, it resolves the Tableau content — accepting URLs, workbook names, view names, or IDs — and retrieves the view image at full native resolution along with metadata (owner, project, usage stats, datasources). Second, it classifies the visualization genre (Business Dashboard, Analytical/Exploratory, Narrative, Editorial Infographic, Scientific/Technical, or Data Art) and applies the 7-domain evaluation framework with weighted scoring, including a lightweight interactivity assessment integrated into the layout and audience domains. Third, it delivers a brief summary (score, tier, top 1–2 recommendations) and asks the user whether they'd like the full review as a Word document or text on screen.
Each visualization is scored across seven domains, weighted by their impact on overall effectiveness:

Scores are calculated using banker's rounding and placed into six tiers ranging from "Iron Viz Ready" (8.6–10.0) to "Tableau Public...ly Concerning" (1.0–2.9). The framework includes anti-pattern penalties (up to -2.0 for issues like 3D charts or spaghetti lines), bonuses for aesthetic excellence and accessibility (up to +0.8), and an ethical gating system that caps scores at 7.9 for misleading scales, exposed PII, or severe accessibility failures.
Tableau dashboards are interactive tools, not static posters. VizCritique Pro evaluates visible interaction design from the rendered image and inferred affordances, integrated directly into the Audience Adaptation (Domain 1) and Strategic Layout (Domain 4) scores rather than as a separate domain.
The assessment covers four dimensions:
Filter Presence & Placement — Are filters visible, logically positioned (top or left for "set context first"), clearly labeled, and appropriate in number for the target audience? Executives need 0–2 filters; analysts tolerate 4–6; more than 8 visible filters signals clutter for any audience.
Interaction Affordances — Are clickable elements visually distinct? Do charts appear to function as cross-filters? Are there visible navigation elements, reset mechanisms, or action indicators?
Information Density vs. Interaction Tradeoff — Does the dashboard show everything at once (static report style) or use interaction to reveal layers (progressive disclosure)? The appropriateness depends on the identified audience: executive dashboards should be scannable without interaction, while analyst dashboards should require it.
Multi-View Navigation — For workbooks with multiple sheets: are tabs named descriptively? Is there a clear navigation pattern? Does the view count match the scope?
Interactivity findings can adjust Domain 1 and Domain 4 scores by up to ±0.5 each (±1.0 total), and are reported as a dedicated sub-section in the domain-by-domain feedback.
Pre-publish quality gate — Run VizCritique Pro on a dashboard before sharing it with stakeholders. The score and recommendations identify the highest-impact fixes to make in the shortest time, with specific time estimates for each improvement.
Design review standardization — Teams can use the consistent 7-domain framework to establish shared quality standards. The scoring removes subjectivity from "does this look good?" conversations and anchors feedback in observable evidence.
Skill development and coaching — The domain-by-domain breakdown with "What's Working" and "Opportunities" sections helps dashboard authors understand visualization principles through the lens of their own work, making feedback immediately applicable rather than abstract.
Portfolio and certification prep — Authors preparing dashboards for portfolio submissions or Tableau certification can use VizCritique Pro to identify blind spots and verify their work meets professional standards before external evaluation.
Interaction design review — The interactivity assessment helps authors evaluate whether their filter strategy, progressive disclosure model, and navigation design serve the target audience — catching UX issues that pure visual design reviews miss.

VizCritique Pro is calibrated to score what's present first, then identify gaps. A dashboard that does its job correctly with appropriate charts, clear structure, and purposeful color starts at 7.5 — the floor for competent design. Deductions are proportional to actual viewer impact: a missing threshold line is a missed opportunity, not the same severity as a wrong chart type. The internal scoring accuracy checklist verifies calibration, color assessment, bonus application, proportionality, arithmetic, rounding, tier alignment, evidence citation, ethical compliance, and interactivity assessment before any score is presented.
Every evaluation produces a 7-part structured output: TL;DR summary, itemized scorecard (with interactivity adjustment notations), domain-by-domain feedback (including Interactivity Design sub-sections under Domains 1 and 4), score driver summary, final score with calculation, tier label, and prioritized recommendations. The brief summary is delivered in-chat immediately; the full review is generated in the user's chosen format only after they confirm.
