ADR: MVP Design Rationale

Status

• MVP design delivered, yippie hooray wahoo

Design Problem

Update the old (pre 2020) dds.mil design so it's:

• modern looking
• mobile friendly / mobile first
• uses USWDS design system
• is compliant with accessibility standards
• provides a solid foundation that is scalable
• integrates new content/copy

Design Solution

• adopt USWDS design system to a tee, for a solid MVP foundation. will add DDS "Spice and personality" in V2 in the way of visual mods, updated photography, updated icons
• don't modify or change uswds system for this MVP in an effort to get this thing built asap
• designed in a mobile first approach, content is easily stacked/expanded and scaled
• by design for MVP, the layout is meant to be dead simple to start with, then we can make it fancier and spice it up in future versions as we get a feel for what content needs are
• by design for MVP, lacking any DDS branding aside from logo, we'll address in a future version once we get the foundation in place

Consequences

Pros

• Will be scalable
• Adheres to gov't wide design standards
• Support mobile first
• Provides a solid foundation to improve upon

Cons

• looks very gov't, but that's the deal right?!?!?
• lacking "DDS" flair/personality but -- that is by design and intend to elevate the visual/brand in future versions
