Now, if I select all the text, delete it, the app freezes with CPU usage at 100% for more than 18 seconds—tested on a MacBook Pro (Mid 2014).

that's good. we need to work with that not to lose it from sight. It's not severe when I tested it now, but didn't do much profiling.
