Caution
Cutting, drilling, or sanding carbon fiber has to be done in a well ventilated space and wearing a respirator mask. Wetting the surface helps to minimize the airborne particles. Please research the safety recommendations regarding processing carbon fiber composites.
- Cut the extra pieces using a small handsaw, Dremel or Jigsaw
- Save the extra pieces such as the round spacers and the cable strain relief arms
- Use a file to round the holes in which the belt loops around, to avoid the possibility of the belt being cut by the sharp edge.
The most commonly available high temp epoxies are:
- Loctite Power Epoxy Universal (150C)
- J-B Weld High Heat (550F)
Links can be found on the BOM page
Caution
Make sure the carriage plates are oriented the right way before gluing them together
Steps:
- Clean the mating surfaces very well using Isopropyl Alcohol.
- Prepare a couple of screws, washers, clamps and Vaseline
- Place the carriages over each other an trace the overlapping area with a pen or marker (white)
- Apply a very thin layer of epoxy to one of the areas.
- Position the pieces together precisely and clamp them. Make sure they are positioned the right way as illustrated above!
- Add Vaseline to the screws as an epoxy release agent, and secure the plates together, while double checking for alignment.
Tip: You can take a glob of Vaseline on a paper towel and dunk the screws in as you place them. Don't worry about the overspill - Leave to cure according to the instructions
Note: This picture was taken before epoxying the carriage. The final result was not this clean :)
