## When will wiki be retired from Teams?

We are currently approaching last step of the Wiki removal. In January 2024 Wiki tab in channels and Wiki app will not be reachable in Teams.

When the last stage is rolled out, users will not be able to transfer their data. The only way to do access the data will be via SharePoint.

Currently, users are still able to export channel wiki into OneNote. For new channels, Notes tab is automatically added.

## What will change with Wiki tab?

At the first stage, the Teams application will suggest adding OneNote tab:
When entering the empty wiki, we get the suggestion to add **Notes** tab:

![Top bar suggesting OneNote tab](../../img/teams-wiki-retirement/20230403-100825-HyLdRQf0Ri.png)

The empty Wiki tab will not be locked yet. We will still be able to make some edits.

When we go to the page with existing content, we will see a different bar:

![Top bar proposing to migrate to OneNote](../../img/teams-wiki-retirement/zWcpmWZFjX.png)
![Suggestion to add Notes tab](../../img/teams-wiki-retirement/20231006-062515-58WloXFYAD.png)

That experience is now (as of April 2023) generally available.
For any wiki with content, we can either access it via the Wiki app or export to Notes (=OneNote):

<Note>

The bars will be visible to users with rights to add or remove tab in a channel. For others, there will be no bar.

</Note>

## How will the migration process look like?

The yellow warning bar will be added to the top of wiki tab:
<Tip>

![Warning bar at the top of wiki tab](../../img/teams-wiki-retirement/2023-02-06_17_33_06-000086.png)
We can _enforce_ this experience by adding content to empty wiki in the app. We will then have the option to export them to the **Notes** tab.

The bar says:
</Tip>

> Wiki tabs will go away in June 2023, you can export your content to a new Notes tab that will be created for this channel
After the migration, Wiki tab will have one button, redirecting to the **Notes** tab:

Once we click the **Get details** button we'll be redirected to the next screen giving more information:

## How does the migration process look like?

The pop-up says:
We start in the wiki tab. It shows a button **Export to notes**:

> What to expect when you export:
> * Each wiki page **will be saved in as a separate page** (in OneNote) in the Notes tab
> * Some changes to formatting such as font style and spacing may occur
> * We'll keep a read-only version of your content in the Wiki app for reference
> * In Notes, you can take notes and organize content for this channel
![Suggestion to view or migrate](../../img/teams-wiki-retirement/20231006-062807-aKhWyBiQD2.png)

After using **Export to Notes** button we'll see the progress screen:
After clicking it we will see the progress screen:

### Section links stop working

I would say this is expected. In Wiki we were able to get permalink of the section. Those links does not work in OneNote.

Yes, wiki tab will be retired from private channels, too. There is an important difference in terms of the migration. According to [Export a wiki to a OneNote notebook](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/export-a-wiki-to-a-onenote-notebook-8cd8ab0c-2314-42b0-a1d0-5c6c4c5e1547):

## Are meeting notes retired?

Although meeting notes are based on the wiki functionality, the announcement doesn't cover it at all.
Yes, meeting notes are replaced by Loop-powered solution: Collaborative Notes.

If we dig more, we can find something about the meeting notes in the [roadmap entry 101509](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=101509). The entry initially said:
The [roadmap entry for collaborative notes](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=101509) did not mention Loop before the official announcement. The entry initially said:

> Every Teams meeting now comes with a collaborative OneNote canvas. Create notes from the Teams calendar or during a meeting. You can easily recall your notes and manage your tasks directly from OneNote.

## What's the difference between wiki and OneNote?

OneNote can be considered *wiki on steroids*. Wiki was always meant to be a simple text editor. The main things that are making wiki less usable than OneNote are:

There's a lot of things uncovered for the Teams wiki retirement. However, there are things we can already do to be prepared.
