Commit Queue Requirements:

  • Fill out all sections of this template.
  • All sub component pull requests have been reviewed by their code managers.
  • Run the full Intel+GNU RT suite (compared to current baselines) on either Hera/Derecho/Hercules
  • Commit 'test_changes.list' from previous step

Description:

Add two new low resolution S2S coupled configurations: C12 ATM + 9deg OCN/ICE and C24 ATM + 5deg OCN/ICE. Warmstarts for C12mx900 and C24mx500 were generated at 31b1938 from the control tests for each resolution and added to the staged input data directory on hera.

New input is located /scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp4/Denise.Worthen/input-data-20250131 and must be sync'd to all platforms. The date on the input data directory is arbitrary.

Both C24-5deg and C12-9deg utilize 11 tasks. Both control tests (24hrs) run on Hera in less than ~ 1 minute. A baseline was created and verified at 36babd5.

Commit Message:

* UFSWM - add control, warmstart and restart-from-warmstart tests for C24 + 5deg Ocean/Ice and C12 + 9deg Ocean/Ice
  * FV3 - add new SDF for low-res physics

Spoke with @JessicaMeixner-NOAA at the GW meeting today and she asked if we're using waves in these tests. Did we have a reason for not including waves? I know they're not really doing anything at these resolutions, scientifically, but if we want to test the plumbing ... I suppose we could ask the same question about chemistry?

@LarissaReames-NOAA No specific reason, no. I was following the current c48-5degs for the lower resolutions and that original C48-5deg does not include waves.

Yeah, understood, that makes sense. Could we give those components a try? If we're going for a plumbing test here, it makes sense that we should include those components.

@JessicaMeixner-NOAA I see your comment where to find the 9-deg WW3 files. Do you have similar files available for 5-deg? We're adding a C24-5deg and we could, if desired, update the existing C48-5deg to include waves.

I only created a 9km. Can we just use that for both tests for now? I wont have time to create a 5km for a while.

@JessicaMeixner-NOAA 9km? You mean 9deg I hope ;-)

We're adding C24-5deg and C12-9deg. Are you suggesting using 9-deg WW3 for both? So that it is C24-5deg Ocn/Ice + 9 deg WW3?

Yes, I do mean 9 degrees :)

Yes, for now I'm thinking 9 degree for both, but I can make a 5 degree, I just know I can't do it today and I don't want to make promises about when. I figure this way, we're at least getting the technical aspects of it in.

OK, I'll also try to test w/ adding, but I'm also not sure about my own timeline.
