Using Quota Events in Valkyrie

As you are writing your scenario you might decide that you want to make your investigators work a little in order to accomplish the tasks that you are setting out for them. One way to accomplish this is by creating Quota based events.

There are two different types of Quota events that you can create, both of which are similar but can have very different outcomes.

Event Requirement

The first is event requirement. This is when you are creating an event that requires a skill roll of a certain number or higher to accomplish the task. Think of something like a strength roll to break down a door, or an observation roll to search through a stack of papers.

  • First figure out how and where you want the Quota even to occur. In my example I’m using it to create a break down the door event using strength on an Explore Token that I have placed on a door from the Entry Hall Tile.

  • Next Click on the Event button to bring up the event settings for the Token

  • Here you’ll want to add a little flavor text explaining what’s going on. You can be brief, or as colorful as you want to make the experience. Here is the text as it’s written in mine since I use a text editor to write mine out and paste it in. ‘A large wooden door leading from the room. The knob appears to be locked. You look the door over to size it up and believe that you will be able to knock it loose. \n \n Test {strength}’

This lets our investigators know that they will need to try and break the door down using their character’s strength attribute. By adding the {} brackets the software will add the Test image for display. See Special Symbols for more information.

  • From here click Next Events

  • This page allows you to set up how things are handled based off the number of passes rolled. Simply click in the box marked quota and type a number equal to how difficult you want the test to be. Once the investigators reach this number the test will pass. This can be done in one or multiple activations of the Token.

  • Then click the plus button under continue and add a new event so that you can create an event that explains what happens once the test is passed.

  • Now switch over to the Event menu and fill in everything that you want your successful test to accomplish. In the example provided I announced the door breaking with. ‘As you hit the door with your shoulder, it begins moving inward as the frame cracks. \n \n Place the Billiards {MAD20} as indicated then remove the Explore Token leading to this space. The momentum of your blow carries you one space into the Explored Room.’ This action also adds the Billiards room and removes the Token that was used for the Quota Event.

  • And here are the events in motion.

Pass/Fail

The second type of Quota Testing is a Pass/Fail event. Now every Quota event is technically a Pass/Fail, but you have to assign a fail event if you want something to happen if enough success are not rolled. Say you have an item, but you only want to give your investigators one chance in which to grab it before it falls through the cracks of a wooden stairwell. Or you need to grab a book before flames engulf it.

  • Setup you event as above, however when you are in the next events of your test, you will need to click the + next to Buttons

  • This will create another line named Button 2, simply click in the line to rename it to Fail. Then create an Event to handle the fail condition.

  • And now this will play out depending on which way the dice roll.
