Classes Ahead

Maurice HT Ling edited this page Jul 29, 2025 · 1 revision

I will not knock but leave the door ajar
No syllabi to chase and no roster to claim
My name if called will echo from afar
Not out of need but out of flame
I taught from hunger
Now I teach from still
The beacon shines
But no trumpet blown
If asked I will come
Not bend of will
But as a stone already known
To serve when needed
And tat is enough
A lightship awaits when the sea is rough

Commentary: Although I have reached the point where I no longer need to teach for financial survival, I continue because I see each class as a contribution to the field that once formed me, to the science that shaped my mind, and to the next generation who will carry it forward. This re-framing allows the fatigue to be held differently – Not as a burden of duty but as a quiet offering of presence.
