CABLE committee meeting, 10th March 2016, 1.30pm

  1. Trunk updates:

a) Updates in progress

i) #62 (radiation/albedo bug fix, ASAP), #92 (if BP confirms), #66 (initialisation bug), #89

  • Need to work with BP to confirm these changes *

    ii) SLI and POP and other VH/LN enhancements, #18, #61, #73, #93, #90, #94. Proposed meeting between VH, JS, BP, RL, (LN)

  • Meeting proposed for Thursday 17th, 11am to work through the non-module changes/enhancements/bug fixes which might impact on other people's applications. RL to organise invitation. Jhan to commence work on putting discrete elements into the trunk e.g. SLI, POP *

    iii) #95 (and #44)

  • Revisit when other changes implemented. *

    iv) Comments on Ticket #15 have been updated (CABLE-JULES).

    v) Ticket #85 (refl/taul) has been marked resolved, the code changes having been uploaded to the trunk some time ago.

    vi) Ticket #69 has been resolved.

  • (iv)-(vi) implemented by JS *

b) Update still to come #70 (BP to check backwards-compatibility)

  • RL to follow-up with BP *

    c) Development work tickets (RL request in CABLE news, #97 now created for hydrology work)

  • Query re process for making small/trivial changes to trunk e.g. as NH starts to work with the code. Preference is that NH collects changes in a branch and transfer to the trunk can be coordinated with JS once a Jenkins-based testing suite is available. *

  1. CABLE-JULES coupling

a) Progress with coupling into UM8.5 for ACCESS-CM2.

  • Some progress with permanent ice points (issue with how prognostics were passed). Uncovered a bug with initialisation of wb/wbice which is in ACCESS1.3 as well. Snow simulations now seem better, i.e. not accumulating. Current focus is on energy balance for bareground particularly with latent/sensible heat correction terms which may not be correctly set now that they dynamics loops through sections of the code multiple times *

    b) CABLE in JULES4.2/UM10.1

  • Trying to progress this at our end. Upcoming Rose/cycl training should help with working with UM10+ *

  1. Benchmarking/test suite

a) CABLE technical test suite – other test users?, document on wiki? CASA-CNP test?

  • JS has briefed NH on this and it will be presumably become part of Jenkins based testing *

    b) PALS

  • On track for early May to be back online *

    c) Jenkins etc (NH)

  • Making good progress. What should focus be after testing suite? Documentation using Doxygen of interest. Also need to collate/seek contributions on code clean-up that people would like to see addressed. *

  1. CABLE video conference - March 16th, 2pm
  • Up to 30 minutes each for VH and LN. 10 minutes for NH to introduce Jenkins and LS to update on UM8.5 coupling. Some time available for general discussion. *
  1. CABLE development work

a) CABLE for CMIP6

  • Nothing to report *

    b) Land use change

  • VH to update as part of video conference *

  1. Next meeting date: Week of April 25-29.
  • Friday 29th April, 2pm (or Tuesday 3rd May if date change required) *
  1. Any other business
  • Discussion on how to handle different versions of parameter files in the repository e.g. def_veg_params, choice of format to something more self-describing e.g. namelist or netcdf (but netcdf not so easy for parameter estimation via PEST). JK noted that we need to make code fail if it does not get a parameter file that is appropriate to the case being run. *
